+Vax Buster I don't bother pumping up my tires pre-race as I am going to trade bikes and I would hate to over inflate the bike if the next rider was smaller than me.
Why sign up for the race when you could just challenge a triathlete uphill for pinks? :D hahaha do you get it because most triathletes cant climb you see it's funny because oh nevermind
I like to ride my bike, have fun, but I also like when my bike looks spotless. Doing the things Simon showed in this video doesn't mean I won't ride my bike, or I won't have fun.
It's one thing having scratches on your bike but when they were put there by a bike shop in which the manager simply shrugs his shoulders and denies any responsibility or liability, is very frustrating and annoying!
I had an absolute mess removing some electrical tape that I put in my chainstain, there was an awful sticky residue afterwards. A rag and WD40 cleaned it but I would never put it again on my frame. I now wrapped some old bar tape on the chainstay, looks awesome and no sticky residue.
Thank you GCN... I felt so much better knowing that there's nothing you can do to keep your Crank scratch free... I felt so bad when my chain popped out of nowhere and gave my dura ace black crank minor scratches.... I was heart broken
Check your local auto tint shop. Some carry a product call clear bra made by 3m. Consumer puts these on the hood to prevent dings. They are clear and comes in sheets. You can cut them to fit wherever you want.
We use clear vinyl which is usually used on car bumpers etc. Wrap the entire bike, incl cranks. Works on all bikes except matt paint finishes as it then appears gloss.
Handlebar finishing tape works good too. I've had the same single strip on a cyclocross chainstay for a couple years now. Seems to hold up well to the elements, wet chain lube, industrial degreaser and the aforementioned chainslap.
I wanna repaint my bike had it new for while then because it took me a while to get used to riding again I ditched a few times hit the curb wrong a few times and you pretty much guess what happens lol 😆
There are also ceramic paint coatings now. They can be applied to cars, boats, planes, motorcycles, and....I don't see why they wouldn't work on a bike. Ceramic Pro is a common one. It's like another clear coat that is basically scratch proof, chemical proof, etc. and your bike will always look shiny as dirt won't really stick. It's a great investment.
Low budget solution for the chain stay: Cut a rectangular section out of an old tube and zip-tie it onto the chainstay. Works well for mountain bikes. The rubber helps absorb the chain's impact and the cost of materials is a few cents.
If you run speedplay zeros you can do what I did and just set the inside float so your heal won't contact the crank, and no need to change your cleat position.
Just now seeing the video, but... I had my bike custom built. Brought the frameset only to a car paint protectant facility that specializes in XPEL wrapping, and had my bike wrapped, then ceramic coated. Took them 2 days, but, I don’t even wash my bike. Water and a microfiber towel, if there’s anything at all (ceramic coating does wonders...).
Tip for the chainstays. Go to your LBS and ask if they have any plain black bar tape finishing tape. (the stuff thats provided with the bar tape. Guarantee they have a massive pile because they use electircal tape) and make it more rounded.
I have these protections around the cables as shown in your video 01:06 but the paint is long gone. The steel frame looks deeply used too... of course the bike is old, around 20 years, but I really don't ride it a lot, as I still have the original bottom bracket, so maybe the tape can be useful if you change it regularly, else you need to have really soft protectors !
Old garden hose, cut up MTB tires, inner tubes, held with zip ties, and electricians tape, where needed, as appropriate. I took the peddles off and slid an inner tube on the crank arms. Makes for a bad ass looking MTB, and is virtually scratch proof.
Yeah, I put electrical tape but I missed a few spots and have ridiculous holes in weird places. For a brand new bike, it was pretty frustrating, but oh well!
Chronic knee injury is something you absolutely do not want. I just went through 1 year of physio and countless purchases of pain meds, knee supports, exercise balls, foam rollers and multiple trips to the doctor far outweigh the cost of buying a new crank. Don't mess with your cleats if you're riding pain free!
My tip: Car Repair Lacquers. Small container of special paint to repair scratches on car painting (one brand I know - Motip, search, there must be plenty). Simialarly to helicopter protective tape, there is ready solution in other tech area. Just buy lacquer(s) of your frame colours (or very close) and you can re-paint scratches in few minutes (degrease scratch area first, of cause - it is written on the laquer label too). That way you don't need to protect bike overmuch and worry on gravel about expensive re-painting. Just remove scratches when they start to be noticeable. This tip is not suitable for all types of fancy painting and/or carbon, of cause.
REI bike shop employees insist on removing my clear protective tapes even after I politely requested they leave them in place. Thank you for the repair video so now I don't need to take my bike in and have my wallet gouged. Thumb up.
Helicopter tape in the arch under the fork crown and on mine, in the arch of the seat and chain stays. Then under the bottom bracket where the front and rear mech cables go because the cables are so close to the bb shell that they wear a grove in it.
I was thinking he was gonna wax it or something like that 😏 I would give a suggestion to GCN to make a video of covering the whole frame with some antiscratrching wax or antiscratrching foil, there must be something like that which would be extra light and even better protecting while still look like from factory. GCN Google for it and give us a video please.. Iam sure everyone will appreciate it. Great work as always tho 👍keep on riding 😘
I've got to agree with a few of the other commenters below, nothing protects your chain stay nor looks as stylish as some old cloth handlebar tape wrapped around your chain stay. Although I only have skinny tubed steel frames, might be different story on bulky aero carbon bikes.
another way to help prevent scratches is to get a bike that doesn't have a matte paint job, my front fork is a matte neon/dew yellow and my frame is satin blue and i only have the scuffs on the fork, even in spots that should have marked the frame as well
i wrap the chainstay with used bar tape. well actually i'm ok with scratches. wrap the chainstay with old bar tape is for cushioning if i shear my rear mech off.
Find a shop that installs protective film on cars (3M and others make the product). They always have scraps from car projects, the product is really good quality and the price is right...FREE.
You ever peel one of those neoprene covers off of a bike that's had it for a while? Dirt will usually get under it and scratch the frame horribly, and you won't see it until the damage is done a hundred times because the neoprene covered it up. Not a bad option if your bike's already scratched up there...
What about wider pedal spindles rather than moving the cleat? I pedal heal in and my LBS switched me to +5mm wide Shimano Ultegra pedals. Also available in Dura Ace. And Speedplays have both narrower and wider spindles.
Great video BUT what about removing scratches already on the bike... I took bike to a local shop but because it had been lent against other bikes and other bikes lent against my bike (which has a glossy frame), there were now scratches on both seat stays!!! So am now left with the issue of removing these scratches. Am thinking of using a rubbing compound, microfibre towels and elbow grease... thoughts?
My wheel and cranksets got scratched today aftet a crash i had while riding and over thinking 😑😑. People look where you want to go. Look into the bent dark side of the side road and you will find yourself heading there in no time. Also, when stressed or anxious, ride slowly. 😢😢
Looking @ 1 of these bikes - variant of a-h.set & they're interesting cept the bars on the Scott Foil where awfull at the back - my 10 quid flat-bar jobs from CRC are more comfortable...
#torqueback I use a product called Crankskins on my SRAM RED carbon cranks. They are die cut perfectly for cranks and do save the finish from rubbing. They will eventually wear through the protective plastic but you can reapply easily and save the finish of the cranks. No affiliation, just a happy user.
I have question about carbon fibre frames and having quite big chain lock hanging on it, will it damage it ? how can i minimaze risk of damaging it? I already put chain through a old bike tube, how resistant are carbon frames to random accidental hits with steel (like while putting chain around it to lock it)
One of my friends took my brand new FELT Broam (it isnt the craziest bike but it definitely a nice bike and for a 15 year old) without asking me because he was in a hurry, he that dropped it next to the bike rack against a rock wall one side is completely scratched and dented up now. Lets say where not really friends anymore 😂
I do not represent this company but there is a company called flectr is a German company that sell frame protector plastic sets and colored reflective stickers.
another tip... don't let your friends borrow your bike. i did that today and my friend crasht into a bike rack and then flipt over into the bushes because he did a what he called a 'wheelie' . now there are some pretty awefull scratches on the top tube paint, you can see the aluminium. so don't let somebody ride your pride ;)
I have a phobia of lraing bikes against a wall by their tyre, I just think it puts two much lateral strain on the rear wheel. I just can't help thinking about stressing mechanical things, like undoing my hi-hat clutch every time I'm done playing the drums!
I just bought a used bike with quite a few scratches on it. I would love any recommendations on how to fix them/spot repaint them. #askgcn #askgcnanything #askgcntech
When my bikes get too scratched I just sign up for a triathlon and upgrade my bike during transition. Added bonus as it slows down your competition
+Scott McCullough
+Scott McCullough What happens when they catch up?
+Scott McCullough You should be at the top!
+Vax Buster I don't bother pumping up my tires pre-race as I am going to trade bikes and I would hate to over inflate the bike if the next rider was smaller than me.

Too late. Now I need GCN to do a video for How To Refinish Your Bike Like A Pro
I take pride in scratches, dents, chips, mud and all other signs of a lot of use and fun :-) No point having a bike you are scared to ride in the rain
well put Dave ... ride it .. have fun.
I like to ride my bike, have fun, but I also like when my bike looks spotless. Doing the things Simon showed in this video doesn't mean I won't ride my bike, or I won't have fun.

I had the same problem.
Thank you GCN... I felt so much better knowing that there's nothing you can do to keep your Crank scratch free... I felt so bad when my chain popped out of nowhere and gave my dura ace black crank minor scratches.... I was heart broken
i once perfectly striped my bike in black and white electrical tape.... because it looked awesome, but i was about 7......
toasty bear when I was 7, we put clear tape on our steel bikes. it protected them very well.
Check your local auto tint shop. Some carry a product call clear bra made by 3m. Consumer puts these on the hood to prevent dings. They are clear and comes in sheets. You can cut them to fit wherever you want.
Go for the freeride MTB style - inner tube wrapped around the chainstay, and cut out a section of an old tire and zip tie it to your bottom bracket.
Scratch reduce weight, why bother?
vivoslibertos lol
vivoslibertos fact, removing paint reduces weight and your bike will rust and rust I just cheap carbon
@@dieter2889 rusting equals weight loss too 😬😄
@@dieter2889 damn just slap a sticker on it then were all good
What si didn't tell you, is his bike is actually white, it's just filthy and covered in stone chips, so he leaves it dirty...
It kills me to see scratches on my bike but then I've accepted them as battle scars
I wanna repaint my bike had it new for while then because it took me a while to get used to riding again I ditched a few times hit the curb wrong a few times and you pretty much guess what happens lol 😆

Congrats Si on the big win in gmbn x-country race. Chapeau

zip tie? where's the vomit emoji

scratch on our bike is like battle scar. that is the sign how your bike and you go on a battle haha :)
How to lean my bike on a wall via the rear wheel? Please show us!
I'm still keeping my bike in the original package!
I have these protections around the cables as shown in your video 01:06 but the paint is long gone. I have been using 3M helicopter tape on the cranks for years and works great.
his bike is so nice
Back in the days, we used to cut a mtb tube and fix it with cable ties to protect the chainstay of our DH bikes
I do this to my chainstays too, not only to protect from chainslapping, but also because sometimes my heels brush against them when pedaling.
Si what about recycling old bar tape and put it on the chainstays ?
Old garden hose, cut up MTB tires, inner tubes, held with zip ties, and electricians tape, where needed, as appropriate. I took the peddles off and slid an inner tube on the crank arms. Makes for a bad ass looking MTB, and is virtually scratch proof.
0:40 is that a euphemism 🤔
I use gaffer tape for any frame protection purposes - more durable than electrical tape, and doesn't fade as quickly
'I've actually just peeled one off...' 0:41 - sorry, had to giggle! Where I come from, that means to drop one's guts! 🙊
1 word : Plasti Dip.

Yeah, I put electrical tape but I missed a few spots and have ridiculous holes in weird places. For a brand new bike, it was pretty frustrating, but oh well!
What about if you're competing in a scratch race?
Comment of the week?
+Oscar Laight If it was I'd be so happy XD
+Ellis COTW for sure.
+Ellis That made me literally laugh out loud.
U can use the transparent protector on the cranks too
Chronic knee injury is something you absolutely do not want. @Patrick...what's that got to do with frames scratches
That bike is gorgeous.
Came to see how not to scuff my new crankset. Told not to bother.... Thanks Si.

Just wear a foil hat
Too late guys, my bike is scratched up
We can use heat shrink wire to rap cables of brakes and gear cables.it will surely avoid scratches
I've got to agree with a few of the other commenters below, nothing protects your chain stay nor looks as stylish as some old cloth handlebar tape wrapped around your chain stay. Although I only have skinny tubed steel frames, might be different story on bulky aero carbon bikes.
I love my scratches, they are signs of use.
+Fruit Climber I mean it's OK to keep your gears, and cranks clean, got keep it running smooth.
+Fruit Climber people ask me why I only clean my drivetrain on my mtb, this is why lol
i use used bike interior on chainstep highly recomemded
Can you guys make a video on how to remove small scuffs and light scratches off a carbon frame. Thanks. Cheers.

Not a bad option if your bike's already scratched up there...
That's the first thing I did when I bought my new Emonda SL6 is cut pieces of 3M thick clear tape on all the vulnerable parts of the frame...
Mat Watson, Carwow.. Your son is doing great!
What about wider pedal spindles rather than moving the cleat? I pedal heal in and my LBS switched me to +5mm wide Shimano Ultegra pedals. Also available in Dura Ace. And Speedplays have both narrower and wider spindles.

you own my dream bike!
pleeeese make a video of what you think about kask protone and infinity
wrapping anything around cables will mean any grit caught between this and the frame will still scratch. Film or tape best protection long term
what is the brand of bike in this video that is beautiful and those rims look like they can handle anything
How is that aero carbon seatpost held in the work stand? Is that just a rag wrapped around it?
What a machine, that Canyon Aeroroad! Now, does bike wax do anything to protect the paintwork?
Any chance of a how to repair paint chips video as my frame has suffered on the local cornish roads
My wheel and cranksets got scratched today aftet a crash i had while riding and over thinking 😑😑. People look where you want to go. Look into the bent dark side of the side road and you will find yourself heading there in no time.

Wax also works well
I've heard some protective film ruin the paint jobs....any tape you specifically recommend for a carbon bike?
I don’t get how you can lean it only against the rear tire, wouldn’t the handlebar and saddle touch the wall first?
damn this dude loves his bike
Looking @ 1 of these bikes - variant of a-h.set & they're interesting cept the bars on the Scott Foil where awfull at the back - my 10 quid flat-bar jobs from CRC are more comfortable...
How do i put rear tire against the wall with no support from the handlebar and the saddle??
Is enamel paint a good option for filling in paint chips?
#torqueback I use a product called Crankskins on my SRAM RED carbon cranks. They are die cut perfectly for cranks and do save the finish from rubbing. What bike is that? Looks really cool!
The front and back forks of my Pinarello carbon road bike got scratched! What should I do in order to remove those scratches?
What is the disadvantages of scratches on bike??
You can also cover the chainstay with bar tape. If its done well, it even looks cool, much better then the ugly electric tape ;)
I have question about carbon fibre frames and having quite big chain lock hanging on it, will it damage it ? how can i minimaze risk of damaging it? I already put chain through a old bike tube,

I don't mind nicks and scratches on my bike as long as I take care of it enough to give me a good ride everytime.
My bike came with rubber cable covers for all cable on the areas that they rub
Zipp tyres on Visions... (!) and Tyre logos not centered around the valve (!) Sy, what the frack?
My local bikeshop does these things for free if you buy your bike there!
What's the best frame protection?
adds to overall weight though!
help!!! what if u already have smudges on your matte frame, what is the best way to remove or make them look new again??
beautiful bike, what is that?
very pleased

Two videos with the same Canyon in the bike stand. Simon either loves that bike or Canyon dropped a few extra GBP for the exposure.
Yea, that's why a said they dropped a few more Great British Pounds.

+Elias Rosado I dont know what are those, do they hold up better?
Why not just use clear packing tape to protect the frame against cable rubs?
Whet about clear vinyl wrap i have seen people doing this?
I just bought a used bike with quite a few scratches on it. I would love any recommendations on how to fix them/spot repaint them. #askgcn #askgcnanything #askgcntech
have you ever make a review about chinese carbon frame wheels and other parts or visiting their factory??
no, we haven't there any lots and lots of factories.
so i need to buy reams of that stuff i used to cover my school bioks wiv...?
Helicopter blade tape .. it works.
@GlobalCyclingNetwork I hate when frames are sa-steptable to gravel chipping 😂😂😂 #toungetiedsimon
